Example Essay Topic - Improve the Content of Your Example Essay
Example Essay Topic - Improve the Content of Your Example EssayMany students choose a specific topic for their examples essays and that topic should be very closely examined in order to make sure that the writing style and grammar are correct. If you look over your example essay you can notice several areas that need to be improved upon. For example, there is one section in the essay that can't stand out. It needs to be improved upon. It has the subject line of a blog post on college-related topics. In fact, it is the only part of the essay that contains this kind of language. The first paragraph of the blog post is totally irrelevant and needlessly complicated. The writer doesn't know what to say to open the discussion. You have a good writer in front of you, but you also have a lazy writer. This means that there isn't an activity in the whole text. Therefore, it's not going to get read. Then there is the second paragraph. Why is it written in such a complex way? Isn't it obvious to ju st change the sentences or adjectives? That would be much easier for you to do.Next, there is the sentence structure. What was meant with this sentence was 'Being a victim makes one want to be treated well.' It's just too busy for you to know what it means. In this case, grammar and other aspects should be checked. The next sentence should simply be written like 'Being a victim makes one not want to be treated badly.' You can rewrite this paragraph to say this more accurately, however, it might take a long time to get the paragraphs exactly the way you need them. Try looking for another example essay topic. The last part of the essay should simply be done in a question or a conclusion. Just read the entire post and ask yourself if you understand it. If not, then you need to rewrite the paragraphs. And finally, the entire sentence will be read if it doesn't end with a question, a question ending sentence, or a conclusion. Write a sentence that contains all three of these things. That se ntence is your own essay topic.

The Past is Prologue
Question: Summary Shakespeare once wrote that, "The past is prologue." But what does that mean? History is a constant influence on the present, giving us a guide to what is going on now and a context through which to view what is happening at any given moment. Find a current newspaper article on a current event in Africa, South America, or Asia.write a summary of the article and explain how it fits into a historical context. Answer: Currently, the biggest and most dangerous outbreak of disease took place in a number of countries in West Africa (Peters, 2012). There have been a significant number of deaths as a result of this epidemic and the news article that was published on the 24th February, 2015 by the Aljaeera focused on this issue. The article focused on the research conducted by the scientists from the entire world who are working faster to bring out the best treatment for this rare disease. Further the article states that the United Nations Ebola Mission is further insisting that the world should not panic over the issue as the number of cases has been dropping gradually. Later the article discusses on the origin of the Ebola virus and the statistics related to the number of people affected. With the help of this article this study tends to search for the historical elements that are relevant to the present day regarding the issue of Ebola. The history of West Africa depicts that in the historical times disease has been a major hindrance to the development in this area. Throughout history there were immense outbreaks of epidemics in this region in Africa. Before the rise of the slave trade most West African population gathered to achieve the ecological balance with the help of controlling vegetation and hence decreasing the level of local diseases (Fage, 1978). In the present day, scientists are using this information with regard to their ways of decreasing the outbreak of diseases in order to fight the present epidemic of Ebola. The Big Lebowski Essays - The Big Lebowski, Dude, White Russian
The Big Lebowski All of the relationships among the elements in the film the Big Lebowski may seem to be enigmatic with each other, but this style of film creates an integrated system of disunity. The Coen brothers demonstrate this style through various motifs through out the film, from the main character's name to what he drinks. The film is a perfect example of a film which has the theme of disunity. In the film the main character Jeffery Lebowski, refers to himself as "the Dude". This element of the story becomes a motif. The Dude is referred to, and refers to himself as the Dude because it represents his personality, which is an easygoing "cool" character. The common Western society slang which is associated with the word dude, is male prostitute. In the scene where the Dude returns home after being arrested in Malibu, he find himself engaging in sexual intercourse at the request of Mod Lebowski. After they finish, Mod explains to the Dude that she was using him to concede a child. Obviously he was not given money in exchange for sexual favours but, the Dude, (much similar to real prostitutes) was used for sex. The Dude is continuously used by his friends and business associates through out the whole film. Although presented as a laidback cool character, the Dude's title is representative of how he is seen by everyone around him. In the film, Bowling is seen as a man's activity, a place where go to compete and get away from the world. In the bowling alley there is never a female present in the shot within any scene. This motif is reinforced during the scene entitled Gutter Balls. In the Dude's trip-out it starts off as a bowling spoof pornographic film, which can also be considered a male thing. It has shots of floating bowling pins and balls rearranged in numerous sexual positions, where the pins represent the male genitalia. Further on in the dream, Mod, who is a strong independent character, is represented by Viking costume she is wearing. Contrary to this, she still required help from the Dude when bowling. In the Big Lebowski bowling is seen as a male dominated activity During the scene where the Dude and Mod Lebowski engage in sexual intercourse, the Dude pores himself a White Russian. The Dude explains that the alcohol and marijuana helps him think. "I'm keeping on a very strict drug regiment to ahh, keep my ahh, mind limber." This is shown when almost immediately after he smokes his marijuana and pours his White Russian he figures out where big Lebowski's money is. In contrast to this, the drugs and alcohol can also be seen as an obstacle in the Dude's effort to solve the case. At one point the Dude crashes his car after spilling his drink and dropping a lit joint onto his lap. In another scene the Dude is arrested because his White Russian was drugged. Drugs and alcohol become a paradox of the Dude's success. With these motifs in mind we are able to see that the Coen brothers used different motifs show any number of different things about the film. They are able to mesh together themes of masculinity to society's views of the weak. With this, the Big Lebowski has a theme which can only be called eclectic.

Major manufacturers of pigment fo r the architectural coatings sections account for 60 per centum of gross revenues in the architectural coating sections. The competition is reasonably stiff when it comes to private shop trade names or forte shops. Even with the turning success of Jones Blair it is non adequate and in order to make their concern ends at a clip when growing is nonexistent. Jones Blair must take immediate action and billow their gross revenues squad and alter their gross revenues energies. Mass merchants pose a serious menace to the hereafter achieved gross revenues degrees of Jones Blair Company. Jones Blair Company is presently looking for solutions for deriving more consumers through marketing their architectural coatings and sundries in the southwesterly United States. Market Segmentation The market of Jones Blair can be divided to two groups: Dallas-Fort Worth country and Non Dallas-Fort Worth. Among these two countries. there are the contractors. the DIY families and the professional painters. From reading instance. I gathered that the estimated dollar volume of architectural pigment and allied merchandises sold in Jones Blairââ¬â¢s 50 states service country in 2004 was $ 80 million ( excepting contractor gross revenues ) . The DFW are accounted for 60 per centum or $ 48 million. while the staying 40 per centum or $ 32 million is sold in the other countries outside the DFW country. 70 per centum of the DFW gross revenues are accounted for by do-it-yourselfers while the other 30 per centum is sold to professional painters. In the other countries outside of the DFW country 90 per centum of gross revenues are accounted for by do-it-yourselfers while the other 10 per centum is sold to professional documents. ( See Exhibit 2 ) . This would means the per centum of the market section is as following: DFW ( $ 48 1000000s ) Non-DFW ( $ 32 1000000s ) Professional Painters 70 % ( $ 33. 6 1000000s ) 30 % ( $ 9. 6 1000000s ) DIY households 30 % ( $ 14. 4 millions1 ) 70 % ( $ 22. 4 1000000s ) Plan of Action The senior direction squad has examined the pigment industry. particularly the architectural pigment markets. and they have yet to come to a decision. The president of Jones Blair. Mr. Alexander Barrett. is be aftering to hold another meeting with his executive squad where they will each show their suggestions and he has exclaimed a determination must be made. Recommendations Jones Blair executives have developed four options to alleviate the companyââ¬â¢s selling job ( which are outlined as follows ) : a ) Cut monetary value by 20 % B ) Spend extra $ 350. 000 on corporate advertisement ; degree Celsius ) Hire one extra gross revenues representative vitamin D ) Do Nothing ( Status Quo ) a ) Cut monetary value by 20 % Compared to other taking national trade names. Jones Blair is priced comparatively high. This is based on the highly high quality and public presentation of the merchandises. By cutting monetary value. Jones Blair will be able to remain competitory in monetary value with other the other merchandises on the market. B ) Spend an extra $ 350. 000 on corporate advertisement This money will be used to increase consciousness. Most of it will be spent on telecasting ads targeted chiefly in the Dallas Fort Worth ( DFW ) country at the do-it-yourself market. Brand image is of import to consumers and telecasting ads are a great manner to acquire their name out. Most of this population is cognizant of this merchandise and merely some of this population would buy it. degree Celsius ) Hire an extra gross revenues representative Hiring an extra gross revenues representative will let Jones Blair to concentrate on new markets. These markets should be outside of the DFW country and let for new metropoliss and provinces to acknowledge Jones Blair. vitamin D ) Do Nothing ( Status Quo ) Since Jones Blair has continually seen net incomes each twelvemonth ; they should keep their current selling aims and make nil. Jones Blair has done an first-class occupation of this in the past by watching the borders and commanding costs. By making nil. the company will non necessitate to pass any extra money. vitamin E ) Alternate Recommendations a. ) Cut monetary value by 20 % In 2004 architectural merchandise gross revenues volume was $ 12. 000. 000. Jones Blair has a current net net income of $ 1. 14 million. and to remain profitable it must keep this sum. $ 12. 000. 000* . 35= $ 4. 200. 000 If Jones Blair reduced its monetary value by 20 % the part border will drop to 15 % . ( $ 12. 000. 000 ) * . 15 = ( $ 1. 800. 000 ) If the company drops the monetary value by 20 % the company will see a 33 % addition in gross revenues. ( $ 1. 800. 000 * . 33 ) = $ 4. 200. 000 ( $ 594. 000 ) Strength: Jones Blair will sell more merchandises. because it will be able to vie with its rivals in monetary value. WEAKNESSES: May non be able to sell plenty in volume to cover cost of goods sold. If the monetary value is more competitory with other companies it may non be looked at as superior quality. b. ) Spend extra $ 350. 000 on corporate advertisement. The selling section proposes a telecasting run targeted at the DFW do-it-yourself market. This will be an extra $ 350. 000. but will significantly increase the consciousness of Jones Blair merchandises. Research has proven that trade name consciousness is a major factor in buying determinations. If Jones Blair does hold to utilize this method the company will necessitate to do at least $ 122. 500 to interrupt even and cover the cost of this new publicity ( $ 350. 000/ . 35= $ 122. 500 ) . Most of the DFW consumers are do-it-yourselfers. so a telecasting ad will be good in this market. Strength: Consumers will go cognizant of Jones Blair. Do-it-yourselferââ¬â¢s history for 70 % of volume in the DFW country. Ad is proven to increase consciousness. and consciousness is a critical factor in consumer buying determinations. Failing: About duplicating current advertisement costs ( $ 360. 000+ $ 350. 000 ) . This recommendation requires a big budget and has small warrant of consequences b ecause about 75 % of the sing audience does non purchase pigment. Consumer purchasing procedure shows family purchasers choose a shop foremost. non a trade name ; hence. concerted ad is required. non trade name advertisement. c. ) Hire an extra gross revenues representative. Gross saless outside of our place district DFW are important for keeping competition in the market. A gross revenues rep would be the company $ 60. 000 a twelvemonth. So the company would necessitate ( $ 60. 000/ . 35 ) about $ 171. 428. 58 of extra net incomes to cover this. 120 retail merchants are located outside of DFW. If we look at our current dollar sum needed to remain profitable $ 4. 200. 000 and split that by shops $ 4. 200. 000/120= $ 35. 000 So $ 171. 428. 58/ $ 35. 000 = about 5. So the company would necessitate a new gross revenues rep to get at least 5 new histories a twelvemonth to breakeven. STRENGTHS: New clients may convey more chance to the tabular array through word of oral cavity. Doesnââ¬â¢t cost the company a important sum of money to make. WEAKNESSES: Does non assure new clients. Itââ¬â¢s merely concentrating on most profitable market. DFW. d. ) Do nil ( Status Quo ) Jones Blair will non alter any of their selling schemes. Strength: Does non be the company any excess money to keep current aims. Jones Blair is presently doing money. why alteration? WEAKNESSES ? Jones Blair will non ever be profitable in the hereafter ; the cost of research and development will merely increase. Needs to remain competitory in the market and non looking into long term vision of the company. Concluding recommendation Jones Blair needs to look into the hereafter and envision the company viing with rivals. Its best stake is to concentrate on the consumers in its chief place market. DFW. If they can derive consciousness of the place market. sooner or later word will distribute throughout all of their markets and concern will din. Making a $ 1. 000. 000 minimal income expressions like pocket alteration. Right now Jones Blair can afford this and still hold a $ 400. 000 net income. Target Market The mark market for Jones Blair is consumers in its chief place market. DFW. Specifically the consumers in their architectural coatings and sundries arena. Marketing Mix Promotion: Jones Blair Company advertisement can potentially hike their patronages conveying more consciousness to the DIY section in the southwesterly country of the United States. This was basically the aim of the executive meeting and advertisement is proven to increase consciousness. and consciousness is a critical factor in most consumer buying determinations. Topographic point: The Company distributes its merchandise through 200 independent pigment shops. timber paces and hardware mercantile establishments. With the expanded advertizements Jones Blair can spread out to their selling range linking with more consumers. particularly in the southwesterly country of the US. Monetary value: About duplicating current advertisement costs ( $ 360. 000+ $ 350. 000 ) . advertisement would be the best manner to make the multitudes in the parts that are traveling unnoticed. Merchandise: Architectural coatings and sundries supplied throughout the southwesterly United States.

Financial statements Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Financial statements - Essay Example report that measures the success of the company operations for a particular period of time and this is used by business and investment people to determine the profitability, investment value and creditworthiness etc (Keiso and Weygandt, 2007, p. 126). Income Statement summarizes revenues, gains, expenses and losses. Sales, fees, dividends and interest are parts of revenues, while expenses take forms of cost of goods sold, depreciation, interest, wages and salary etc. Gains and losses are different types like sale of plant assets or investments, settlement of liabilities etc. Expenses are debited and revenue are credited, and the total of these can be a net debit (loss) or net credit (profit). Income statement evaluates the past performance of the company and provides a basis for future prediction and assessing risk or uncertainty. The Balance Sheet presents the financial position of the business through the main elements that are called assets, liabilities and stockholdersââ¬â¢ equity (Davies and Pain, 2002, p. 49). Assets include those that can provide future economic benefits as a result of past transaction (plant, machinery, vehicles and all) and liabilities include those that are probable future sacrifices of economic benefits arising from present obligations- loan, overdraft etc- (Keiso and Weygandt, 2007, p. 173). Assets are regarded to be debit balances and liabilities and stockholderââ¬â¢s equity are credit balances. Balance sheet is always in a balance and hence it can be summarized as: Neither balance sheet nor income statement show or directly analyze some of the key changes taken place in the financial position. They donââ¬â¢t show cash inflows and cash outflows that are in turn, highly important to know and assess the timing and uncertainty of cash flows. Cash-flow statement, instead, provides cash inflows and outflows and it calculates the net changes in the cash position of the business. It comprises of 1) operation activities which are cash effects of

Gay; To Be or Not To Be Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Gay; To Be or Not To Be - Essay Example ut existence throughout my life ââ¬â I knew that I wanted to keep on existing, and suicide was not something that crossed my mind overly much (no more than any other person who has lived through teenage years, probably). For me the question centered on my sexuality. Who am I? I asked myself, and what am I doing? Am I gay? These are questions that troubled me for much of my growth, and I spent a great portion of my development denying who I was. To be gay, or not to be gay, I asked myself, without even realizing that the question in being asked was probably answered. It is not like I was a child of the fifties or sixties, growing up in a time when being gay was the greatest sin one could ever imagine. By the time I had graduated high school it was the late eighties, and gay rights activists were already marching down streets in San Francisco and New York, academics were discussing a new Queer politic that was emerging, and gay people everywhere were being told ââ¬Å"come out, you have nothing to fear.â⬠But the problem is that this conception of being gay and coming out, that you know it internally but choose to hide it from society, is not something that actually happens very often. Before even having the option of ââ¬Å"coming outâ⬠to friends and relatives, you have to have a great internal dialogue with yourself, and find out who you are. Doing this alone in your teens is not an easy thing, not by a long shot. I remember the first time I had an inkling that I might not be like everyone else (or at least, how I thought everyone else was ââ¬â looking back now Iââ¬â¢m sure I knew many closeted gay people growing up.) I was just entering the ninth grade, a time when many people are first learning about their sexuality, and I looked across my homeroom classroom at a close friend who was sitting their, wearing spaghetti straps (I had a somewhat lenient school) and cleavage somewhat exposed. Now this was someone who I had known for almost my entire life, and a

Introduction To A Social Experiment Social Work Essay
Introduction To A Social Experiment Social Work Essay This assignment follows the experiences of an immigrant Indian/Kashmiri family in their first couple of months in Australia. The family was a period of five weeks for a period of one to two hours per week in their family setting at home and once in the final week on a family picnic which they were gracious enough to invite me to. For discretionary purposes all personal information including names, addresses and any other identifiable markers have been changed in keeping with the primacy of the familys privacy. The family consists of five individuals, the father Mr. Fayaz Ahmad, his wife Rubina Geelani, their two children Ahmad, a boy of 10, Maryam a girl of 12 and their 5 year old nephew Abbas. The family from here on for purposes of brevity will be known as the Ahmads. The Ahmad family is from the northern most state in India, Kashmir. Mr. Fayaz used to work as an engineer in the state of Kashmir with the municipal department of the state as a civil engineer superintendent. Ms. Rubina has a bachelors degree in education but has never worked full time, Maryam and Ahmad were both studying in a well reputed private school and were both performing above average in academics as well as extra-curricular activities, Abbas is their nephew who was recently witness to the tragic death of his parents in a militancy related incident in their home state. Kashmir has had a long history of troubled political activity dating back to the partition of India and Pakistan during which time the Muslim majority state of Kashmir became a bone of contention between the two newborn nations. Since then there has been a slew of political and military activity that has served only to worsen the tangled situation between the two countries with two wars being fought over the state and an armed uprising against the Indian state fueled by Pakistan which resulted in massive state sponsored atrocities as well as transgressions on behalf of the armed rebels. Several other variables, including the growing influence of China, the rise of Afghan Islamist groups, political instability etc has also contributed to the increasingly complex situation in the state. The Ahmad family immigrated to Australia following the tragic death of his brothers family in a military encounter against suspected militants, young Abbas was the only survivor of the tragedy and was a dopted by Fayaz and his wife who decided to leave the trouble torn state behind in order to secure a better future for their children. I came into contact with them through a mutual friend who is a volunteer activist for militancy affected families in Kashmir and who also helped Fayaz through the formalities surrounding immigration. Week one: My first encounter with the Fayaz family was on a pleasant sunny Australian Sunday afternoon the very next day after they had moved in to their home. My reception in their home was very warm and enthusiastic with Mr. Fayaz greeting me very effusively and treating me with great hospitality and warmth. I was told by my friend that the house was a temporary accommodation and was not in that great shape, nevertheless everywhere I saw I could see the efforts of Ms. Rubina and Mr. Fayaz to tidy up the place. There were boxes and unpacked luggage everywhere but Mr. Fayaz managed a comfortable couch space in the main room for me to settle down in. The object of my research was somewhat puzzling to them as they seemed to follow me everywhere I went and it took some while for me to explain to them that this was merely an observation and not an interview, this was greeted with some skepticism and worry by Ms. Rubina who immediately wanted to know what I was looking for. The initial warmth gave way to some mistrust on behalf of Ms. Rubina who instructed the children not to play downstairs or in the open but to go to their room and play there. My initial thoughts were that the mistrust of my presence in their midst was related to their negative experiences with official government agencies that are notorious for their clandestine activities amongst the civilian population in Kashmir. The rest of the time passed by without any major incident and was spent mostly talking to Mr. Fayaz over consecutive cups of tea. Week 2: My second week started right after Mr. Fayaz found a part time job at a nearby retail institute as a sales executive; on my visit to the house he was not present as he was picking up a late shift that day. I used this opportunity to increase my rapport with Ms. Rubina and get to know her better, I felt that our previous encounter had not gone over the smoothest and after some initial reluctance she allowed me to observe the children playing in the yard. I had to assure her that I would not take any photographs of the children before she would allow me this. The children showed little effect of the trauma in their past, although Ahmad was showing signs of lethargy and malnutrition, upon asking Ms. Rubina about his health she replied that he was always a picky eater and had been getting progressively difficult to get him to eat properly in recent weeks. On closer inspection of the children I saw that both Maryam and Ahmad were trying to involve Abbas in traditional Kashmiri games, a version of hopscotch and tag that somehow always ended up with Abbas winning, it was obvious that both Maryam and Ahmad were letting Abbas win these games. Later on while observing them I noticed that they shied away from me and rather spent time with their mother in the kitchen rather than stay anywhere they knew I could see them. In normal cases I would have construed this as natural shyness on behalf of the children but after seeing them play I could not imagine them being very timid by instinct. Week 3: My third visit marked the first time that the children had started school in Australia, I was fortunate enough to observe them coming home directly from school. Maryam seemed very pleased and satisfied with her day at school, although she spoke only in Kashmiri around her mother I could gather from the tone that she was excited about the prospect of school, Ahmad on the other hand seemed subdued and quiet, on closer observation I noticed the signs of a scuffle on the child, with a pocket torn off his new shirt, he was taken away by his mother to his room, I presumed this was to comfort him as there were no sounds of scolding from his room. Maryam was pleased enough to try and interact with me and be comfortable around me, she offered to show me her new books and notebooks, one of which bore a note by her teacher praising her drawing skills and another one which had her homework written down in her small, neat handwriting. She spoke with me in accented by fluent English asking me abou t why I was always in the house with them. The conversation led to the topics of her brother and little cousin, she admitted that Abbas was much sadder nowadays than in the past and he frequently wet his bed at night and as a result had to sleep with the parents in the other room instead of with them. I resolved to talk to Mister and Missis Ahmad about getting Abbas to see a child therapist. Week 4: My fourth visit was a bit rocky as my previous suggestion of a child therapist for Abbas had not gone down well with Mister Fayaz. He felt that I was making unfair demands of him and that the child had been doing fine before I was there and even at one point tried blaming me for Abbass changed behavior. The majority of the time was spent trying to explain to him that it was just a suggestion and that he was in no way bound to do what I asked of him. Later on he admitted that the stress of managing finances for the household was starting to build on him and that he was worried about their future in Australia, on further questioning he informed me that his engineering degree was invalid in this country and he would be stuck with lower level jobs until he could complete another technical course here in Australia. Week five: I was surprised by my fifth and last visit when the family decided to take me along for a surprise picnic. Although not strictly their domestic settings I decided to go along with them to observe their interaction with the Australian picnic experience. The children seemed slightly apprehensive instead of the natural exuberance that most children would show when informed about going to the beach, apart from Ahmad both Abbas and Maryam seemed to stick close to Ms. Rubina and reserved themselves to helping her pack whereas Ahmad wanted to put on his rubber wings and flippers right in the house and go to beach thus dressed. While helping Mr. Fayaz get the car ready I came to know that Ahmad has been having trouble with bullies at school who make fun of his accent, that he has been dreading school and enjoys their outings with a relish, Abbas had started his sessions with a child therapist and was no longer wetting his bed and that Maryam had already enrolled in soccer class. I provided Mr. Fayaz with some brochures and booklets regarding part time courses and short term courses that he could take. Analysis: There were several issues and points that I observed while with the Ahmad family in regards to their reasons for coming to Australia, their interactions with the local culture and the nature of their family relations. Most importantly I came to realize about their unique needs and perspectives, their unique characteristics in regards to what they could bring in to the community, the culture they came from and the special needs that the three children of the family that needed to be addressed. My analysis can be elaborated as: For the greater part of this analysis the focus will be on young Abbas, then on Ahmad and on Maryam in decreasing order of significance in relation to special early care needs. The very first observations regarding Abbas were those of his interactions with the different societal settings that he had to experience. For instance his initial immigration to Australia was prompted by a drastic change in his original environment of Kashmir where he suffered the debilitating trauma of losing both his parents, in conversations with the Ahmads I got to know that Abbas was naturally a shy child and following the death of his parents he became even more withdrawn, to the point where he managed only a few sentences in conversation per day with the Ahmads and not even that with strangers. The initial experiences of the children with their societal systems were also apparent in how they treated me, a stranger in their house, the initial mistrust and fear that they projected on me was only a reflec tion of their past environment where authority figures or those who were in anyway related to official status were viewed with mistrust and even fear, this symptom extended not only to the children but to Ms.Rubina as well, when she forbade the children from interacting with me. The family structure in conservative societies like that of the Ahmad family is generally constituted of only close blood relations, the adoption of children as in the case of Abbas is almost unheard of, the most that a Kashmiri family will do is provide all the necessary support and accessories to a relative but that is all the other party will remain; a relative, in this case the traditional family structure has changed to that of a typical western nuclear family model and that has put an additional load on the two adults as Ms. Rubina and Mr. Fayaz do not have the traditional family support structure in place to help them manage their children any more. The cultural background of the Ahmad family is also an issue that has led to certain hindrances while integrating with their new environment, this was demonstrated with the trouble that Ahmad had with bullies at school and the frustration and worry that Mr. Fayaz felt at his educational qualifications not being considered eligible in the Australian work environment. The stress also showed on Ms. Rubina when she felt mistrustful of me, furthermore the bed wetting episodes of Abbas were symptomatic of elevated stress levels as Maryam informed me that he had never had this kind of problem before. There were of course the needs of the children to take into consideration especially those of Abbas and Ahmad. The specific list of activities and processes that I recommended for the children were: Child specialist therapy for Abbas to help address the trauma of his parents death and the sudden culture shock of shift from Kashmir to Australia. Extracurricular activities for Maryam in order to enable her to come out of her shyness and gain the confidence and self-esteem she needs in order to engage in social interactions effectively. Ahmad requires counseling as well in order to encourage better, more constructive outlets for his frustrations, bullying is always a significant issue to be dealt with in regards to early child care and Ahmads case is no exception but his situation is further compounded by the complexities of the previous experience in the stifling and rather constricted environment of Kashmir along with his experience in a private school in Kashmir as opposed to a public school in Australia In addition to the counseling steps for the children I also suggested certain short term technical courses for Mr. Fayaz so that he doesnt feel trapped in a lower level employment circle in Australia due to his degree not being recognized here.

Ways in Which the Use of Teams Helps Cadbury Achieve its Strategic Aims and Objectives :: Cadbury Work Ethics Employment Essays
Ways in Which the Use of Teams Helps Cadbury Achieve its Strategic Aims and Objectives 1) Explain the meaning of the ââ¬Å"termsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"groupsâ⬠. Teams ===== A team is a group of people with a common purpose who have complimentary skills. Working as a team has many advantages such as: * Distributing the workload * Reinforcing individual capabilities * Creating partipation and involvement * Improve productivity and pride in what they do * Respond more quickly to change * Reduce middle management level * Draw on expertise of members. There are two types of teams: Formal ââ¬â a formal team is created for a specific purpose e.g. The employees at Cadbury world work as a formal team because they work together to meet their aim of ââ¬Ëcreating brands that people loveââ¬â¢ Informal ââ¬â an informal team develops in a less structured way e.g. a group of students at Josiah mason college may start a discussion on the way the teachers teach and are not happy with it they might get together and do something about it. Groups and teams are similar, however, teams require coordinated effort while individuals may work independently in groups. Groups A group is when two or more people work together on a certain task E.g. a group of students work together to form a presentation. But a group doesnââ¬â¢t have to work together or achieve something a group can also mean something else for e.g. There can be two different places in a cafà © one for smokers and one for non-smokers 1 Describe the ways in which the use of teams may help the organisation achieve its strategic aims and objectives. Working as a team: advantages of a teamwork and cooperation and to identify and understand the stages of team development. For a team to achieve its goals, its members must do more than just carry their own weight. They must involve, support, and share information with there team mates. And they must commit to the success of the entire team, not simply their own success. Working as a team clearly teaches employees the personal, interpersonal, and organizational advantages of working together whether in teams or work groups. Advantages of working as a team * Distributing the workload * Reinforcing individual capabilities * Creating participation and involvement * Improves motivation * Share knowledge and understanding * Provides opportunity for managers and supervisors * It also encourages innovation I will use Cadbury as an example to describe the ways in which the use of teams may help the organisation achieve its strategic aims and objectives. Cadbury Schweppes aim is: ââ¬Ë Work together to create brands that people loveââ¬â¢ Objectives. â⬠¢ Promote ethical business practices â⬠¢ Respect the environment and communities in which we operate

Learning Acitivity Essay
2.Identify and describe three leadership styles. Provide examples of these styles in society? Authoritarian Leadership is one that takes personal charge of decision-making, and demands that group members obey orders (Macionis, 2013. P110). Bill Gates is a great example of authoritarian leadership. Bill had a vision after he took lead of the company and he used all possible resources within his reach and made a dream reality. Bill Gates did not consult others on which way his company should take. Democratic Leadership is making a point and including everyone in the decision-making process (Macionis, 2013. P110). Dwight Eisenhower is one of the best people for this. While serving as a General in the Army he had a task to get the alliance all on the same page this he took great pride and hard work doing so. Laissez-faire Leadership allows group to function more or less on its own (laissez-faire in French means ââ¬Å"leave it aloneâ⬠). (Macionis, 2013. P110). The Danish government adopted this style of leadership and allowed cannabis to be smoked and allowed open prostitution. 3.What does the research by Solomon Asch and Stanley Milgram show us about the ability of social groups to affect the opinions and behavior of group members? The research showed that people when under pressure by peers or an authoritative figure conform. Solomon Asch (1952) recruited students for what he told them was a study of visual perception (Macionis, 2013, p. 110). But what he did was make the students form a small group and put pressure on one of the students. Asch showed them card 1 with a normal line then asked them to match it to card 2 that had three lines on the card. One third of the students chose to answer the question incorrect just like the other students. Stanley Milgram, a former student of Solomon Aschââ¬â¢s conducted conformity experiments study of his own (Macionis, 2013, pg.111). Milgram had a more controversial experiment he took male subjects and put them in electric type of chair to show how punishment affects learning. The teacher to start with 15v and each time that one of the subjects got it wrong the voltage would increase and even though the levels of voltage reached 450 volts Milgram was astonished how eagerly people obeyed authority. .

Forensic Science Research - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 6 Words: 1722 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2019/07/02 Category Science Essay Type Research paper Level High school Tags: Forensic Science Essay Did you like this example? Introduction Forensic science is a complex and critical part of solving todays legal affairs, from serious matters like manslaughter to the evaluation of parentage of a child, it has a place almost anywhere. Forensic science is important because it provides concrete, undeniable evidence. I will cover the history of forensic science and compare past techniques with modern techniques. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Forensic Science Research" essay for you Create order Then I will outline the activity of forensic science throughout the government and how forensic data is analyzed in a lab. After that I will further explain the many subdivisions of forensic science and their specific roles. The History of forensic science Forensic has come very far over the past two hundred years. It has advanced from basic eyewitness account to the analysis of DNA. Two hundred years ago, criminal investigation was very primitive. If a crime was committed, detective would have to rely on confessions, eye witness accounts and the most obvious of clues. When investigating a crime scene two hundred years ago the evidence would have been contaminated and any obvious evidence may have been stolen or lost. Although todays methods are very advanced, forensic science has been around for thousands of years, fingerprinting being the earliest known form that was developed and used the the ancient chinese. Many years later in 1892, Sir Francis Galton established a system for identifying fingerprints. Soon after, others began to develop other methods of identification for fingerprints. In 1896, Sir Edward Henry developed a new way to analyze fingerprints by examining certain characteristic such as pattern, direction and flow. Careful examination and identification of bullets are first recorded in 1835 by Henry Goddard. Goddard used physical analysis to connect a bullet back to a murder weapon. A more exact method was used in the 1920s by Calvin Goddard who created a comparison microscope so match bullets to their shell casings. Gunshot residue detection was later developed in the 1970s with the help of electron microscopes. In the development of forensic chemistry, chemist James Marsh created a way to test for arsenic which was later used in a 1836 murder trial. A century later Karl Lan classified human blood groups and later earned a nobel prize for his work. The advancements that we made in a small amount of time is truly remarkable. From confessions to analyzing blood types, there seems to be an endless amount of knowledge to come. Criminal Investigation Crime scene investigators purpose is to collect and examine any evidence left at a crime scene. They look for things like body fluids, fingerprints, hairs and fibers, and other trace evidence. When collecting these, several different methods and materials are used to do so. Trace evidence includes things such as paint and gunshot residue, drugs, glass, and chemicals. Clothing is collected from the victim and anyone else who was present at or near the crime scene and the clothing is to be sealed in a paper bag and taken to a lab to be tested. If the crime was gun related then the clothing will be tested for gunshot residue. If any drugs or unknown powdered substances are found at the scene then it will be collected with a knife or blade, sealed in separate, sterile evidence containers or bags and sent to the lab for identification. Any hair found is sent to DNA testing lab and unknown substances and drugs go to a chemistry lab. In some cases body fluids are found at the crime scene. Bodily fluids can be saliva, semen, blood or vomit. If blood is found on the body of the victim or any cloth then that will be collected and sent into a lab for possible DNA analysis. There are many tools and materials involved in collecting body fluids from a crime scene. Some of them include scissors, tweezers, a scalpel, luminol, smear slides, UV lights, and sterile cloth. If any hairs or fibers are found at a crime scene then they will be collected using tweezers, combs or vacuums and sent into a lab for analysis. In the event of a rape case, if the victim is still alive then they will be taken to a hospital and examined for any fibers and hairs that could be evidence. Any fibers or hair found at the scene would be compared to fibers or hair of a suspect. DNA analysis can be used to eliminate suspects and to identify if the hair is from a human or an animal. Through DNA analysis a persons race can be identified from a single human hair. Fingerprints are also a large clue in a crime scene. A fingerprint can be left behind due to visible fluids like blood or ink, imprinted in something soft and malleable like a clay or wax, or can be from the natural oils that naturally accumulate on everyones fingers. Investigators might use brushes, chemicals, tape, a magnifying tool, or other materials to collect these prints for evidence. Prints can be left on paper, wood, plastic, cardboard, metal and other surfaces, both porous and nonporous. When a fingerprint is found on a nonporous surface a powder, often a black or a silver powder, is gently brushed over the print until it is visible, then lifted with tape and transferred to a fingerprint card and submitted to evidence. When a fingerprint is found on a porous surface, chemicals like silver nitrate or iodine are sprayed onto the print until visible. Footprints may be found at or around a crime scene. If a footprint or an impression from a shoe is found an investigator will make a casting material and make a cast from the print. Any dirt left on the cast when it is removed is not brushed off but rather sent into a lab for analysis. Tool marks from tools used at a crime scene may also be found. It may be an impression- a tool mark that is created without any back-and-forth movement- or it may be a striation- a tool mark with a series of parallel lines cause by a ba ck-and-forth movement. Attempting to match a tool to an impression is rather unreliable and it is more reliable to make a definite match with a striated mark. When an investigator finds any firearms at a crime scene, they need to follow a specific routine to preserve the evidence. Gloves are worn and the firearm is pick up by the barrel and placed into an evidence bag to be sent to a lab for testing. Forensic scientists can then examine any casings found and match them to a weapon or they can examine serial numbers found on the firearm. By using a laser trajectory kit, investigators can use any bullet holes in a victim or surface to determine the location and height that the bullet was fired from. If the bullet or casing is stuck in a wall or other material then a section of it will be removed instead of attempting to dig it out, which ruins the evidence. When documents are found such as letters, planners, calendars, books, journals, suicide notes, etc. they are collected and preserved. A lab may be required to reconstruct demolished evidence that may have been burned or torn apart. These documents are recorded and analyzed for handwriting samples, forgery, and what was used to print or write the document. Whenever any type of evidence is found at a crime scene, and investigator must photograph it, log it, recover and then tag the evidence. But how is all of this evidence discovered? When examining a body or corpse, investigators look for many things such as stains, wrinkling or bunching of clothing that could indicate dragging, defense wounds, bruises, cuts, any obvious missing items, direction of the flow of blood, insects, etc.. After moving the body, the other side of the corpse is examines in the same manner and then the bod temperature and the room temperature are taken to estimate the time of death. Fingerprints of the body will be taken and placed into evidence. Once the conditions of the body are documented, then the body is covered in a white cloth and transported to a morgue for an autopsy. To efficiently and carefully find and collect evidence, investigators use several different methods of examination of a crime scene. Investigators may use the inward spiral search method where they start from the perimeter of the crime scene and slowly work their way towards the center of the scene in a spiral pattern. Another method is the outward spiral where investigators might start from the center of a crime scene or from the location of a body and slowly and meticulously work their way to the edges of the crime scene in a spiral pattern. If there is a team of investigators, they may use the parallel, grid, or zone search methods. The parallel search method requires the team of criminal investigators to line up and walk in a straight line from one side of the crime scene to the other. The grid search is similar but requires the team to repeat the method from an adjacent side. In a zone search, investigators divide the room into different sections, then search each section thoroughly and then move onto the next section. Essay on Walt Whitmans Song of Myself - 3631 Words
Walt Whitmans Song of Myself This paper deals with Walt Whitmans Song of Myself in relation to Julia Kristevas theories of abjection--my paper does not point to abjection in the text, but rather the significance of the abscence of abjection. This abscence, looming and revolting, arises from Whitmans attemt to refigure a conception of sublimity which delimits the material which can trigger the sublime moment. Whitmans democracy of the sublime is inclusive of those figures on the American landscape, their lives and voices, which are functionalized into his world. It is beyond the foregrounded inversive space--at times utopic and sublime, the space is permeated with universal brotherhood, happiness, the compelled-sentimental-- that I attempt to delve into, that source from which generates the repulsive, hidden quivering of a text which, though cast out and forced into absence, looms in the shadowed relief. The edification of his text and of his readership is attempted through the construction of an inversive space which refigures the sublime: the apex of the cultured. I have chosen those moments in the text in which the poet nears the threshold of bordering abject in order to construct his sublime utopian vision. It is here, this marked refigurement where ecstasy occurs, where material which triggers the sublime is the signal of another text; a repulsive reading looms from the absence of abjection An invocation of the self begins Song of Myself, positioning the text as an edification of the American readership: I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as god belongs to you (lines 1-3). Greed in Macbeth Essay - 1018 Words
Greed is the excessive desire to acquire or possess more, and it is also one of the biggest creators of tragedy. This is so vividly shown in both the novel The Sun Also Rises and in the play Macbeth. In The Sun Also Rises, this greed is directed toward a person, Lady Brett Ashley. Five men; Mike, Jake, Pedro, Bill, and the Count, are fighting to be with her throughout the book. In Macbeth, this greed is directed toward power as Macbeth wanted to become King, and what he does to become it. However, this greed led to the collapse of each character. Lady Ashley left all five men, leaving them devastated, while in Macbeth; an opposing army overthrew Macbeth. In both stories, greed drives the main character to do something, which is thenâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In both stories, the main character achieves the goal that their greed compels them to do. In The Sun Also Rises, Jakes lust for Brett drives him to have an affair with her, in which he thinks that she dearly loves him and he loves her. During the affair, Jake is always so tight with Brett, meaning he does not give her much freedom. Jake lets Brett dance with other friends and drink with other people, but any move that would be against their relationship, Jake would get angry. For example, when Brett had a drink with Count Mippipolous, and invited him home, Jake made her send him away, even though the count did not have any thoughts on her at that time. This is easily comparable to Macbeth, by the fact that Macbeth is indecisive and is a tyrannical leader, and he did anything to stay in power. For example, when Macbeth hired the three murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance, because according to the witches, all of Banquos sons will be King. Eventually, this greed to achieve what was not intended for them ended in the defeat of the characters. In The Sun Also Rises and Macbeth, the main characters greed leads to his downfall when he took what was not meant to be his. Jake had thought throughout the affair that Brett loved him. Bamboo free essay sample
Bamboo is actually and evergreen plant, and a member of the true grass familyà Phocaea. It is the fastest growing woody perennial on the planet, and some of the giant species can grow up to four feet per day! It is found on nearly every continent in the world, and has a wide range of useful applications. Bamboo products are used extensively in the modern world, and its usage has been growing rapidly in recent years. It is an easily renewable resource and its cultivation is beneficial to the environment. A bamboo grove creates 5 times more bio-material than a typical pine forest, making it beneficial to the environment. Bamboo is truly an amazing plant, and provides great benefits for our planet. There is currently over 1,000 knownà bamboo species, and 91 genera. The bamboo family is diverse and can grow in a wide range of climates and conditions. Bamboo can be found growing in the cold high altitude mountains of Tibet, and in the warm desert climates of sub-Saharan Africa. Sizes, shapes, colours, and behaviours of bamboo can also vary significantly. The plant can grow as short as a couple of inches, to as tall as 100 plus feet and 8 inches in diameter. Colours of bamboo canes are typically bright green, but can also be jet black, or even striped. The varying of appearances makes them an idea choice for ornamental and landscaping purposes. Bamboo is a staple of the Japanese garden and a symbol of Japanese culture. The cultural significance of Bamboo in Asian culture is profound and has been well documented in the history books. In fact, Bamboo was actually used as the writing medium in ancient Chinese literature. Scribes would write on bamboo slats, which are known in the United States as bamboo scrolls. Much of the history of China has been document this way, and without bamboo much of it may have been lost. Bamboos are woody stemmed members of the grass family, Poeceae, which belong to the family Bambusoideae. All members of the subfamily can be distinguished from the other grasses by foliage leaf blades which are attached to their branch lets by slender leaf stalks or petioles. Other grasses like corn and sugar cane have leaves without petioles. The Culms Like all grasses the bamboos have stems or culms which are segmented by oints called nodes. Bamboo nodes are always solid but between the nodes, the internodes of the culm are usually hollow. A group of culms growing near one another are usually connected together underground by segmented stems called rhizomes to form a single plant. The roots grow from the nodes of the rhizomes. The rhizomes serve as a storehouse of food for the bamboo p lant allowing new culms to grow very rapidly. Each culm grows to its full height in a grand period of growth which usually takes no longer than 2 or 3 months. Thereafter, even though it may live for up to 10 years, the culm does not increase in height or diameter. A plant with small rhizomes can produce only small culms. Under favourable conditions the rhizomes will increase in size and produce larger culms each year until the limit for that particular species is reached. The oldest culms are thus often the smallest and the youngest the largest. Bamboo Culms or Canes The Rhizomes There are two basic types of bamboos, the clampers and the runners. The culms of a clumping species grow close to one another usually no more than a foot apart. While the culms of a runner are often spaced far apart. Up to 10 ft. or more. The spacing of the culms is characteristic of each species and depends on the nature of the rhizomes. McClure first used the terms symposia and monopodia to describe c1umpers and runners. Sympodial refers to the branching habit of clumping rhizomes: each rhizome typically branches into a pair of rhizomes, each of which branches into a pair again. Monopodial refers to the running rhizome which consists of a main axis from which branches arise one at a time. Later (McClure. 1966) the above two terms were abandoned in favour of pachymorph and leptomorph: the first refers to the short. Thick shape of the clumping rhizome while the later describes the long, slender shape of a running rhizome. Both pairs of terms describe some of the features of the two rhizome types but I prefer to use the words clamper and runner. A running bamboo has the capability of spreading rapidly. It can also get nourishment from the ground at some distance from its culms. Under favourable growing conditions the runner planted as an ornamental can become a problem, growing into a lawn. a flower bed or a neighbors yard. The c1umpers are more well behaved as they can only spread slowly from the edge of the clump. In most cases the clump diameter will be no greater than about 10 or 15 ft. after many years. In most genera of bamboos all of the species are either clumpers or runners. Most clumpers are tropical or subtropical plants that are damaged by temperatures below about 15à ° F, while most runners can withstand colder temperatures. There are exceptions the two most hardy species grown in the U. S. Thamnocalamlls spathaceollsà (Fran. ) Soder. andà Sinarundinaria nitidaà (Mitf. ) Nakai are clumping bamboos The Branches Almost all bamboos have one or more branches that grow from the culm nodes. In many species the lower nodes of large culms remain branchless. The number of branches , their relative size and their arangement on the culm node is an important characteristic for the identification of the genus and sometimes of the species. Bamboo Branches The Leaves The bamboo leaf complement consists of two parts, the sheath and the blade. The sheath wraps around the stem to which it is attached at the sheath base. The opposite or distal end of the sheath develops into the blade which is often flat and bent away from the sheath and stem. Bamboos have two distinct kinds of leaves. Culm leaves and foliage leaves. Culm leaves are attached at the base of their sheaths directly to culm nodes atthe sheath scar. The culm leaf sheath, which is usually large compared to the blade, serves to protect the new culms as they emerge during the grand period of growth. After the culm grows to its full height the culm leaf dries and often fall soff. On the upper end of the sheath on both sides of the blade are two auricles. The bristle-like hairs which extend from the margins of the auricles are called oral setae. Extending up from the central margin of the sheath is the ligule. The auricles and oral setae may be lacking on some species. Culm leaf blades are larger toward the upper end of the culm. Near the upper tip the leaves are similar to foliage leaves; the blades remain green and persist long after the lower culm leaves have fallen off. The culm leaf sheath is often simply called the culm sheath or the sheath. Foliage leaves grow from branchlets. The blades are generally large compared to the sheaths which wrap tightly around the stems often overlapping the sheath above it. The foliage leaf blade is commonly called simply the leaf. Foliage leaves have ligules and often auricles and oral setae. The foliage leaf blade is always attached to its sheath by a stem or petiole in contrast to the culm leaf blade which is often without a petiole. Foliage leaves drop off after about one year but not until new leaves have grown to replace them so that the bamboos are generally green year round. The leaves that grow from main branches tend to resemble culm leaves while those at the ends of culms and branches are somewhere between the two types. To identify species one should look at culm leaves that grow near the middle of large culms and at foliage leaves that grow from branchlets. Bamboo Leaves The Flowers The flowering of bamboo plants occurs at irregular, often long intervals. Each species has its individual pattern; it may flower continuously. yearly. every few years. or at long intervals up to over 100 years. The flowers may be only a few. cover one or a few culms or cover all culms of the species growing in a wide area. With heavy flowering vegetative growth comes to a virtual standstill that may last from a few months to many years, after which the plant may slowly recover its vegetative growth or it may die. Each flower does not produce a seed and often plants will produce a massive quantity of flowers and little or no fruit. The history of the flowering ofPhylloslachysà is given by Adamson et al. (978) for plants grown at the United States Barbour Lathrop Plant Introduction Garden at Savannah, Georgia (hereafter called the Garden). Eighteen different accessions representing 10 different species flowered between 1951 and 1977. Of these, 8 accessions died, 8 recovered and two were still flowering in 1977. During this time all of the accessions ofP. niduariaà flowered while some accessions ofà P. bambusoidesflowered and some did not. Because of the rarity of flowering in most bamboos, one must often rely on the vegetative characteristics to distinguish species. When a plant does flower it often lacks the vegetative parts such as culm leaves which are critical for identification. In some cases most of the foliage leaves fall off of flowering plants Characteristics: Bamboo is an attractive alternative for flooring because of its physical similarities to hardwoods. Bamboo floor manufacturers and sellers promote its strength, durability as well as resistance to insects and moisture while having the added benefit of being eco friendly. The hardness of bamboo ranges from 1180 (carbonized horizontal) to around 1380 (natural) using theà Janka hardness testà versusà red oakà (1290),à white oakà (1360),à rock mapleà (1450), andhickoryà (1820),Brazilian Cherry / Jatoba (2350), (the higher the number the harder the material). Care and maintenance: Bamboo is an aggressive plant and will require general maintenance task throughout the year. Its behaviors are different than many other garden plants. In this section, we break down the common maintenance tasks you may encounter. Following these guidelines will help you maintain healthy and happy bamboo plants. Wateringà ââ¬â Ornamental and garden bamboos require a regular watering schedule, and cannot rely completely on rain water. Bamboo likes to dry after watering, so your watering schedule will need to alternate days. It is important to keep a balanced water schedule, as too much or too little water can be harmful to the bamboo. Newly planted specimens should be watered at least twice a week in their ideal weather conditions. In areas with warm temperatures or frequent wind, the bamboo may require water up to 5 times a week. As a grower, you must make a judgment call on watering frequency by examining the leaves and soil. Bamboo leaves will start to curl inwards if they are not receiving enough water. This is a natural mechanism used by the plant to protect itself against drought. By curling the leaves the plant will prevent water from escaping by trapping it in the pockets it creates. If you notice that your bamboo is starting to display this behavior, it should be a red flag that more water is needed. Soil also needs to be monitored on a regular basis, with this being especially true for container bamboos. Bamboo growing in a container is vulnerable to overwatering, and it is common for gardeners to unknowingly waterlog the plant. This can lead to rotting of the rhizomes and roots, and can even kill the entire plant. Fertilizerà ââ¬â After your bamboo plant is established, it is recommended to fertilize regularly. An organic fertilizer that is high in nitrogen is the ideal choice. Half rotted horse or cow manure is also an excellent choice, and can often be obtained for free. A standard high nitrogen lawn fertilized works well, and is often the most cost effective choice. Fertilizer should be applied once in the summer when rhizomes are developing, and again in the fall or early spring. Apply a 2 inch layer of your fertilizer mixture or compost around the base of the plant. You can also spread the mixture out to areas you want the plants to grow. Thinning and Pruningà ââ¬â Pruning bamboo on a regular basis is usually not necessary and is primarily done for aesthetics. Culms will generally live up to ten years, but can start to dry out and look unattractive later in life. Removing the older culms is an important maintenance task and will promote the health of the newly emerging culms. The older culms will compete for light and nutrients with the younger culms and allowing them to live will lessen the overall beauty of the entire clump or grove. This is done by cutting off the old culm at soil level. We recommend that old or dead culms are removed at least once per year from your garden. In the case of timber bamboos, you can promote large and rapid growth by removing the smaller culms in the grove. Removing small culms will allow for the space and nutrients required to produce giant timber bamboo. Thinning and pruning will do wonders for the health and appearance of the plants. Controlling Spreadà ââ¬â There are several method used to control the spread of running (leptomorph) bamboos. The most common tactic is to install a HDPE rhizome barrier around the growing area. Check out our article on installing a rhizome barrier for a full breakdown. Depending on the area, installation of a rhizome barrier can be a difficult or impossible task. The most simple and cost effective method of controlling bamboo is to prune the rhizomes on a regular basis. Rhizome pruning is a seasonal task, normally done in late fall through spring. As new rhizomes emerge from the soil, a sharp garden spade can be used to sever the rhizomes as they travel beneath the ground. Start by marking out the desired perimeter to which the bamboo should be confined. Next, plunge the spade as deep as possible into the soil along this perimeter. This will cut the rhizomes in the area and limit their growth for the remainder of the season. This must be done at least once per year in order to work effectively. Winter Protectionà ââ¬â Bamboo is most vulnerable during the winter months. In cold, windy climates there are necessary steps to take to protect your bamboo. After the initial planting, the goal is to allow the plant enough time to establish a root system and become hardy enough to survive in freezing winds, temperatures, and frost. Freezing winds are a young bamboo plantââ¬â¢s worst enemy. The cold temperatures are not particularly damaging, but the loss of moisture will cause plant to dry out quickly. For a young plant that is not well established, the aftermath of winter can be devastating. Frost can also be troublesome to bamboo. A consistent layer of frost has the potential to cause cell irreversible cell damage to the leaves, branches, and culms. Leaves are the most susceptible to frost, but the culms are also at risk during the winter. It is important to know and understand the cold hardiness of the variety of bamboo you are growing. This will help you prepare the area according to the exact needs of your bamboo. Black Bamboo covered in snow. (Photo: Paul Smith) The first and most important step to protecting your bamboo in the winter is to provide a heavy layer of mulch at the base of the plant. This will give the soil beneath some degree of protection from freezing temperatures and allow the roots and rhizomes to remain healthy. Good mulch can consist of dried leaves, organic compost, or a low growing groundcover plant. The next step is to protect the plant from excessive wind exposure. This can be done by planting some type of cold hardy plant in the vicinity of the bamboo to deflect and absorb the incoming wind. It is also possible to install a screen or panel in front of the plant to provide an equal level of protection. Uses Culinary The shoots (new culms that come out of the ground) of bamboo are edible. They are used in numerous Asian dishes and broths, and are available in supermarkets in various sliced forms, in both fresh and canned versions. The shoots of the giant bamboo (Cathariostachys madagascariensis) containà cyanide. Despite this, theà golden bamboo lemurà ingests many times the quantity of toxin that would kill a human. The bamboo shoot in its fermented state forms an important ingredient in cuisines across the Himalayas. Pickled bamboo, used as a condiment, may also be made from theà pithà of the young shoots. Pickled bamboo shoots (Nepali: tama) are cooked with black eyed beans as a delicacy food in Nepal The empty hollow in the stalks of larger bamboo is often used to cook food in many Asian cultures. Soups are boiled and rice is cooked in the hollows of fresh stalks of bamboo directly over a flame. Medicine Bamboo is used inà Chinese medicineà for treating infections and healing. It is a low-calorie source of potassium. It is known for its sweet taste and as a good source of nutrients and protein. Inà Ayurveda, the Indian system of traditional medicine, the siliceous concretion found in the culms of the bamboo stem is calledà banslochan. Construction House made entirely of bamboo In its natural form, bamboo as a construction material is traditionally associated with the cultures of South Asia, East Asia and the South Pacific. In China and India, bamboo was used to hold upsimple suspension bridges, either by making cables of split bamboo or twisting whole culms of sufficiently pliable bamboo together. One such bridge in the area of Qian-Xian is referenced in writings dating back 960 A. D. and may have stood since as far back as the 3rd century B. C. , due largely to continuous maintenance. Bamboo has also long been used as scaffolding; the practice has been banned in China for buildings over six storeys but is still in continuous use for skyscrapers inà Hong Kong. In the Philippines, theà nipa hutà is a fairly typical example of the most basic sort ofà housingà where bamboo is used; the walls are split and woven bamboo, and bamboo slats and poles may be used as its support. Inà Japanese architecture, bamboo is used primarily as a supplemental and/or decorative element in buildings such as fencing, fountains, grates and gutters, largely due to the ready abundance of quality timber. Bamboo scaffoldingà can reach great heights. Various structural shapes may be made by training the bamboo to assume them as it grows. Squared sections of bamboo are created by compressing the growing stalk within a square form. [21]à Arches may similarly be created by forcing the bamboos growth with the desired form, and costs much less than it would to assume the same shape in regular wood timber. More traditional forming methods, such as the application of heat and pressure, may also be used to curve or flatten the cut stalks. [22] Products made from bamboo laminate, including flooring, cabinetry, furniture and even decorations, are currently surging in popularity, transitioning from the boutique market to mainstream providers such asà Home Depot. The bamboo goods industry (which also includes small goods, fabric, etc. ) is expected to be worth $25 billion by the year 2012.. The quality of bamboo laminate varies between manufacturers and the maturity of the plant from which it was harvested (six years being considered the optimum); the sturdiest products fulfill their claims of being up to three times harder thanà oakà hardwood, but others may be softer than standard hardwood. Bamboo intended for use in construction should be treated to resist insects and rot. Bamboo pavilion in the Shenzhen Biennale Bamboo has been used as reinforcement for concrete in those areas where it is plentiful, though dispute exists over its effectiveness in the various studies done on the subject. Bamboo does have the necessary strength to fulfill this function, but untreated bamboo will swell from the absorption of water from the concrete, causing it to crack. Several procedures must be followed to overcome this shortcoming. Several institutes, businesses, and universities are working on the bamboo as an ecological construction material. In the United States and France, it is possible to get houses made entirely of bamboo, which are earthquake and cyclone-resistant and internationally certified. In Bali, Indonesia, an international primary school, named theà Green School, is constructed entirely of bamboo, due to its beauty, and advantages as a sustainable resource. There are threeà ISOà standards for bamboo as a construction material. Inà Maharashtra, the bamboo groves and forests are called VeLuvana; the nameVeLuà for bamboo is most likely from Sanskrit, whileà Vanaà means forest. Furthermore, bamboo is also used to create flagpoles forà saffron-coloured,à Hinduà religious flags, which can be seen fluttering across India, especiallyà Biharà andà Uttar Pradesh, as well as inGuyanaà andà Suriname. Bamboo is used for the structural members of theà India pavilionà atà Expo 2010à inà Shanghai. The pavilion is the worldââ¬â¢s largest bamboo dome; about 34 m in diameter, with bamboo beams/members overlaid with a ferro-cement slab, water proofing, copper plate, solar PV panels, a small windmill and live plants. A total of 30à km of bamboo was used. The dome is supported on 18-m-long steel piles and a series of steel ring beams. Textiles Because the fibers of bamboo are very short (less than 3mm), they are impossible to transform into yarn in a natural process. The usual process by which textiles labeled as being made of bamboo are produced uses only the rayon, that is being made out of the fibers with heavy employment of chemicals. To accomplish this, the fibers are broken down with chemicals and extruded through mechanical spinnerets; the chemicals includeà lye,à carbon disulfideà and strong acids. Retailers have sold both end products as bamboo fabric to cash in on bamboos current ecofriendly cachet; however, the Canadianà Competition Bureauà and the USà Federal Trade Commission,[as of mid-2009, are cracking down on the practice of labeling bamboo rayon as natural bamboo fabric. Under the guidelines of both agencies, these products must be labeled as rayon with the optional qualifier from bamboo. Paper Bamboo fiber has been used to makeà paperà in China since early times. A high quality hand-made paper is still produced in small quantities. Coarse bamboo paper is still used to makeà spirit moneyà in many Chinese communities. Bambooà pulpsà are mainly produced in China,à Myanmar,à Thailandà and India and are used inà printing and writing papers. The most common bamboo species used for paper areDendrocalamus asperà andà Bamboo bluemanea. It is also possible to makeà dissolving pulpà from bamboo. The average fiber length is similar toà hardwoods, but the properties of bamboo pulp are closer toà softwoodsà pulps due to it having a very broad fiber length distribution. With the help of molecular tools, it is now possible to distinguish the superior fiber-yielding species/varieties even at juvenile stages of their growth which can help in unadulterated merchandise roduction. Musical instruments Bamboos natural hollow form makes it an obvious choice for many instruments, particularly wind and percussion. There are numerous types ofà bamboo fluteà made all over the world, such as theà dizi,à xiao,à shakuhachi,à palendagà andà jinghu. In India, it is a very popular and hi ghly respected musical instrument, available even to the poorest and the choice of many highly venerated maestros of classical music. It is known and revered above all as the divine flute forever associated withà Lord Krishna, who is always portrayed holding aà bansurià in sculptures and paintings. Four of the instruments used inà Polynesiaà for traditionalà hulaà are made of bamboo:à nose flute, rattle, stamping pipes and theà jaw harp. In Indonesia and the Philippines, bamboo has been used for making various kinds of musical instruments, the modern amplified string instrument, theà Chapman stick, is also constructed using bamboo. Theà kheneà is a mouth organ of Lao origin whose pipes, which are usually made of bamboo, are connected with a small, hollowed-out hardwood reservoir into which air is blown, creating a sound similar to that of the violin.
